Run Benefiting The Topeka Rescue Mission Canceled

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A holiday run that raises awareness for the hungry and those in need has been canceled.

Executive Director of the Topeka Rescue Mission Barry Feaker told 13 News the Rescue Run will not take place this year.

He says it was possible the run might encounter construction along its downtown route. But also, for safety reasons, he says Topeka Police told them they would not be able to host the run after dark.

The 5K has led up to the Miracle on Kansas Avenue parade for the past seven years.

"It's more of an awareness piece and a gathering time right before a very important time of year and that's Christmas season," said Feaker. "That's the time of year that we really do see the largest number of involved people and donations go up, so we'll be looking for another opportunity to bring the awareness to people who are hungry and homeless and really need a boost at the Christmas season."

Feaker says they may try to resume the run in 2015.
