JACKSON, Miss. (WIBW) - The story of a Mississippi girl kicked out of a Kentucky Fried Chicken because she was badly disfigured in a pit bull attack may not be true after all, according to the Laurel Leader Call.

The story, which enraged the nation when it first broke last week, generated around $135,000 in gifts and donations as well as offers of free surgeries for the the 3 year-old.

Now, the paper says the whole thing was made up.

It cites an anonymous source who said a third-party mediator has been brought in. Neither side talked to the Leader-Call, but KFC did a release a statement which read in part:

"We have always prided ourselves on respect for all people and we will continue to emphasize this to all our employees. In addition, regardless of the outcome of the current investigation, KFC Corporation has committed $30,000 to assist with Victoria’s medical bills. Along with the KFC Corporation, we are determined to get to the truth and address the situation appropriately.”
