Redistricting Recommendation Concerns Oakland Neighborhood Residents

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - People in Topeka's Oakland neighborhood want City Council members to go back to the drawing board in deciding new district boundaries...

At a work session Tuesday night, the Redistricting Commission recommended a map known as "Plan B." They also presented an alternative map. Both change mainly the edges of districts to achieve as nearly equal population as possible, as is required by law.

However, several Oakland residents asked the council to reject both proposals because both split their neighborhood between districts two and three.

Councilman John Alcala, who currently represents district two, asked staff to look into options for keeping Oakland together.

The council is scheduled to vote on the new district map next week.
