READING, Kan (WIBW)__ A town hit hard by a tornado broke ground on a new building Wednesday afternoon.

The town of Reading launched the process of rebuilding its community center.

The new building will be twice as big as what was destroyed in the May 21, 2011 EF3 tornado and will include a safe room, which can hold up to 75 people and a back up generator. It also plans to house City Hall and two meeting rooms.

A Kansas hazard mitigation grant paid for 75-percent of the safe room.
FEMA, The Kansas Department of Emergency Management and insurance money helped cover the cost of the rest of the building.
