RILEY COUNTY, Kan. (WIBW) -- Riley County police have launched an investigation into a rape that occurred several months ago in Manhattan.
The agency was made of the sexual assault on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 but it is alleged to have occurred in June.
Officials say the victim, a 20-year-old woman, was raped after she attended a house party where she met the suspect.
According to police, the case is not related to another incident that's made headlines in Manhattan after a 23-year-old woman was sexually assaulted by a stranger on Sunday, August 11, 2013 around 4 AM. An exact location of the offense has not been released but it occurred near Kansas State University's campus.
No other details have been released on the rape case. The RCPD, along with the Kansas State University Police Department, issued a warning encouraging those walking at night to walk in pairs or small groups.
Then, on August 19, 2013, the agency released vague details about a rape suspect being found dead in northeast Kansas.
Alexander Shelton, 26, was wanted for a rape in Manhattan. According to a spokesman for the Riley County Police Department, Shelton was located in a jurisdiction "outside of Riley County... but was unable to be arrested for these crimes as he was found to be deceased prior to police arrival."
RCPD declined to release any other information about Shelton's death and did not specify which rape case they had connected him to.
