TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A Shawnee County public defender is finding himself on the other side of the law.

Wendell Betts is charged with one count of domestic battery and one count of intimidation of a witness. A complaint filed by his wife March 7th alleges he tried to convince her to not file charges.

Betts will appear in court April 24th.

Among clients Betts had defended was Ray Miles, the man convicted of breaking in to WIBW-TV in May 2012, injuring four employees. Miles sentencing is set for April 24.

Betts has had prior legal trouble. In 2007, he was charged with altering proof of insurance cards to show he had liability coverage. He later pleaded no contest in the case. However, it led o a published censure from the Kansas Supreme Court in October 2009. The Court also ordered Betts to be evaluated for depression.
