WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — U.S. Rep. Mike Pompeo has defeated a longtime former congressman in a Kansas Republican primary battle.
Pompeo won the GOP nomination Tuesday over Todd Tiahrt in the 4th District of south-central Kansas, making him the heavy favorite to win a third term in November. Tiahrt held the seat for 16 years before giving it up in an unsuccessful run for U.S. Senate in 2010 against Republican Jerry Moran.
Tiahrt's efforts to win back his old job splintered Republicans who found few policy differences between the two conservative candidates. He reminded voters of the federal money he brought home to public works projects and aviation companies.
Pompeo says he is on a mission to cut government spending and scale back government regulations.
He faces Democrat Perry Schuckman in November.
