WICHITA, Kan. — Wichita Police are calling the shooting death of a young mother gang related.
The shooting happened around 11:45 p.m. in the 3500 block of East Roseberry. That's near Pawnee and Hillside in Planeview.
According to police, a woman and her husband were walking down the street when multiple gunshots were fired. Both tried to run, but the woman was hit. Several people who heard the shots then called 911.
Officers arrived to find a 24-year-old Hispanic woman laying in the street, shot in the head. She was pronounced dead minutes later by paramedics.
Police then began knocking on nearby doors, looking for witnesses. Officers located evidence outside one of the homes and began speaking to a person who came outside. That person was detained for questioning, and police believed others might be in the house.
Officers surrounded the home and called for SWAT. Several rounds of tear gas were fired inside and officers made entry just before 6 a.m., but no one else was found. Police are still processing the scene. Investigators believe shots were fired from the house.
Police have identified her as Nichole Saldana, and family members tell us she is the mother of four children. Lt. Todd Ojile said Saldana and her husband live a couple of blocks from where the shooting occurred.
He said officers are unsure if there was a confrontation beforehand, but believe the shots came from more than one weapon.
Saldana's husband was not hurt, and is not considered a suspect. Police say is a documented gang member.
No arrests have been made. Anyone with information is asked to call the Wichita Police homicide section at (316) 268-4181 or Crime Stoppers at 267-2111.
This is the seventh homicide of the year in Wichita.
