TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- The death of a Topeka teen on I-70 early Thursday morning was ruled a suicide, the Topeka Police Dept. announced on Friday. The 18 year-old stepped out in front of an eastbound semi near the Wanamaker overpass around 6:20 a.m., they said.
Having determined his death was a suicide - and not an accident - authorities withheld the man's name. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not identified either.
After being hit, the teen was still alive when emergency crews first arrived. Despite AMR and firefighters efforts, they could not stabilize him and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
His suicide reduced traffic to one lane for much of the morning and even forced authorities to close all eastbound lanes briefly during rush hour. Traffic wasn't completely reopened until around 10:00 a.m.
