Patrick: Guitar-Shredding Basketball Player Needs Mentor

TOPEKA, Kansas (WIBW) -- If jammin' out on the guitar is something you love to do, or shooting some hoops sounds like the perfect way to spend an afternoon, you might have a companion, 12-year-old Patrick who needs a mentor through the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program.

Patrick is a budding musician. Ever since he picked up the guitar two years ago, he hasn't been able to put it down, and now he has 5. And he actually loves to go to his lessons.

"I get to do a lot of music by like, ACDC, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath. Also Green Day," Patrick told me.

Music is a big part of his life, and he's looking for a "Big" who shares that same love and can maybe teach him a few skills.

"A fun guy that likes music - either plays the guitar or drums."

Patrick is a pretty laid-back guy, but like most 12-year-olds, he wants to be active, and do fun things with a potential Big.

"Something not boring, like video games or playing basketball. It's one of my favorite sports.

I really need a mentor, and since my dad passed away I don't really have anyone to teach me, and hang out with me all the time."

His mother Cecilia said she will do anything to make Patrick happy, but after losing her husband a year ago to an illness, they would both benefit from having a mentor in Patrick's life.

"My hope for him is that he has guidance and teach him the proper way to grow up because he lost his dad at a really young age. To be there for him if he needs it. Because as a single parent, it's very hard on me," she said.

"She just wants to basically do nothing after work and just lay down and take a rest or watch TV. I'm the only child, what do you expect!" Patrick laughed.

He says he doesn't know what it's like to have a big brother but he's pretty open to finding out.

If you want to hang out with Patrick and think you'd be a good fit for him, contact Big Brothers, Big Sisters.

Or, if you can't be a Big, but want to help Patrick, and other cool kids like him find a mentor, you can donate to the Bowl For Kids Sake fundraiser.
