TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)- 13 News received a phone tip from a WIBW viewer that a 4-year-old Topeka boy was left alone in an unheated Sheldon Head Start bus for 3 hours on a very cold day Monday.
Sheldon Head Start Principal Scott Henson says Sheldon bus driver Rick Barr drops off his head start students everyday.
But Monday was different story. 4-year-old Cameron Fagen was strapped into his seat on his way to school, but instead of being dropped off and headed to his classroom, his parents, Carrie and Jeffery Fagen say he was left alone on the bus, in the cold weather, with no heater on, for 3 hours.
To complicate matters, Cameron has had 3 open heart surgeries.
Jeffery and Carrie Fagen did not want to speak on camera because they each have retained an attorney.
But Jeffrey's girlfriend told 13 News the bus driver known as "Mr. Rick" was seen eating in the school lunchroom while Cameron was still in the cold bus.
Principal Henson told 13 News Sheldon hired Rick Barr individually and he is not a Durham company driver, which USD 501 employs to transport students.
At this point, the family says Cameron did not appear to have suffered any ill effects from his 3 hour wait in the unheated bus, but it also appears the potentially dangerous incident may be headed for legal action.
Communications Director of Topeka Public Schools, Ron Harbaugh, says they are investigating the matter and there are still a lot of unanswered questions.
Harbaugh says they still have to conduct more interviews with parents, teachers and the bus driver to find out more details on what exactly happened.
