WILSONVILLE, Ore. (KPTV/CNN) - A startup company in Wilsonville has developed a new technology to treat gunshot wounds that could potentially stop the bleeding in less than 15 seconds.

RevMedx develops products for military medics and emergency services providers.

Their latest invention is called XStat. The product is an applicator filled with dozens of tiny sponges.

It works like this: Emergency responders treating a shooting victim inject the device into an open wound. The little sponges stop the bleeding, allowing medics to provide further treatment to a victim.

Executives for RevMedx told Fox 12 the sponges could potentially be used as a replacement for gauze.

The U.S. military is a financial supporter of seeing this invention succeed. RevMedx received $5 million from the Army to finish developing the product.

The company also won a seed grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

"After multiple rotations in Iraq and Afghanistan, it was always the same complaint from the guys, we need better products that control hemorrhaging," said John Steinbaugh, RevMedx vice president. "You could rapidly apply this product to many people and save a lot of time."

Other RevMedx products include a gauze that will grow to several times its starting size when it comes in contact with bodily fluids, along with an ace bandage that has a pump on the side to put pressure on a wound.

As for XStat, the little sponges do not remain in the body after they are used. Each sponge has a blue "X" on the end of it, known as a radiopaque marker, which will show up in an X-ray so they can be removed during surgery.

RevMedx said the goal is for FDA approval on XStat in the coming month.
