EMPORIA, Kan. (WIBW)-A Lyon County homeowner got an unexpected wake-up call just after 4 a.m. on January 2nd.

"The homeowner was alerted when he heard a bang on one of his doors and the glass breaking on a different door. He confronted the 2 individuals and one round was fired and everything is under investigation at this point," said Lyon County Sheriff, Jeffrey Cope.

Authorities say the suspects, 35-year old Gary Yowell and 30-year old Rodney Yowell, are cousins. Sheriff Cope says the homeowner shot Gary in the hip with a shotgun and held Rodney at gunpoint. The homeowner's girlfriend contacted deputies who arrived in under ten minutes.

Neighbors say the homeowner is shook up by the incident and feels bad.

The residents of the home were not injured .

"We believe there is no known association between the homeowner and the intruders and this is really just a random act of burglary that was occurring," Sheriff Cope says.

Gary Yowell was taken to a Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka with non- life threatening injuries. Rodney is being held in the Lyon County jail.
