North Topeka Business Owners Remain Concerned About Future Of Intersection

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- North Topekans continue to sound off about the future of a busy intersection.

Topeka city council members will soon decide if the cloverleaf at Highway 24 and North Topeka Boulevard should be repaired or replaced with a signal light intersection.

Engineers at KDOT recommend the cloverleaf be replaced with a signalized intersection. Businesses with the North Topeka Business Alliance agree.

"There are no merge lanes. Getting onto the highway is kind of dangerous, but in the end it's not a bridge for growth, and we're all about economic improvement,” said Justin Glasgow, President of the North Topeka Business Alliance and Vice President of Performance Tire and Wheel; that store has a location in north Topeka.

Others believe if city council members decide to rehabilitate the cloverleaf intersection that it also would have to be repaired in the future.

"If they do the temporary repair, they'd be blocking us off twice, which is a big concern for us," said Brian Yingling, owner of Yingling's Auto Service.

The cloverleaf rehabilitation would cost $3 million, with no money coming from the city. The urban signal intersection would cost $5 million, with $1.5 million coming from the city.

Council members are set to discuss the future of the intersection in about a month.
