TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- An early morning fire that destroyed a home in northern Shawnee County started on a back deck in the area of a barbecue grill.

Investigators with the State Fire Marshal's office say the cause of Tuesday morning's fire at 4317 NW 52nd Terrace remains undetermined but they don't suspect any foul play.

Neighbor Laura Mzhickteno told 13 News she heard an explosion around 2 a.m. and walked outside to see the home engulfed in flames, then called authorities.

Fire crews reported the home was fully involved when they arrived. Crews from Soldier Township, Silver Lake and Hoyt fire departments all worked together to battle the blaze. They said the fire was under control by 3 a.m.

Investigators say a propane tank did explode, but it was due to the fire, and not the cause of it.

Two people in the home escaped unharmed.

Westar Energy also responded to the scene.
