TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Two military veterans and major league baseball players now have their own stretch of highway.

The Kansas Department of Transportation Monday unveiled the sign for the Barnes Brothers Memorial Highway.

Virgil and Jesse Barnes were natives of Circleville who played baseball in the 1910's and 1920's.

Students from Royal Valley High School led the effort to gain legislative approval for renaming the 3-mile stretch of K-79 in Jackson County.

"These students own this project. It is theirs, and it will not be found in text book, and you will not find it on a state assessment," said Nathan McAlister, Royal Valley Middle School history teacher. "This kind of project is something that is very unique, and that's what makes it so special."

The cost of the signs was covered by donations and gifts.
