TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Topeka buses will soon have new fare boxes.
The Topeka Metropolitan Transit Authority board approved a proposal with GenFare for the new boxes during their Monday meeting.
General Manager Susan Duffy told 13 News the boxes, which accept money from passengers while on the bus, are 25 years old and can no longer make change for riders.
The new boxes will capture data about who rides on the buses and will also dispense tickets after hours. Eventually, Duffy says, the boxes will accept credit cards.
The board also approved a proposal to build concrete slabs for 20 shelters at stops along 10th and 21st streets.
Duffy also told 13 News that for the remainder of the week, they will be handing out water to bus riders who use the Quincy Street Station, to help them combat the heat and humidity.
