TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)- Monday, 13 News reported the tragic death of a newly graduated Seaman High School Senior on NW Lyman Road in Topeka.
And even though Ronnie Graham's death has not been attributed to road conditions, nearby residents say that area of Lyman Road is dangerous.
Bruce Biester and his neighbors have seen many accidents and say something needs to be done.
"I have seen 2 deaths on this street, both have been jumping on these railroad tracks," says Bruce.
In 2008, 11-year-old Cheyenne Morrissey died when she was ejected from a car that went over the railroad tracks, veered off the road and rammed against a home.
Her mother later pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter while driving drunk. Even though that accident and the Ronnie Graham accident apparently were not caused by the road itself, neighbors say the angle of the road leading to the railroad tracks, deep ditches and lack of street lighting all add to driver risk.
"I think a lot of it is speed too. People are constantly coming down 40,50,60 miles per hour, and the grade of the tracks makes people go airborne," says Bruce.
"People like to hit them and go fast so they can get air and they do it for a thrill," said Damen Harris, lives on Lyman Road.
" I have seen plenty of them going down through the road fast and it scares me," says Christy Harris, lives on Lyman Road.
With John Campos' resignation, this neighborhood does not have a council member but councilwoman Karen Hiller told 13 News the City Council should look into the issue.
"The city can certainly be a partner with the neighbors and neighborhood and the railroad to look at what can be done. We need to sit down and have a conversation and agree on whether or not you have a problem and start looking at solutions," says Hiller.
Neighbors say they would like to see the road leveled off near the tracks, more warning signs and most of all they hope drivers will slow down.
"There is going to be another wreck if we don't quit it," said Damen.
"Just don't want to see another death," sayd Christy.
Topeka Police have not released more specific information in Monday's fatal accident.
