Nationwide Hostess Brands Strike Continues In Emporia

EMPORIA, Kan. (WIBW)-Union workers continue their strike against Hostess in Emporia as they took to the picket lines early Saturday morning.

Workers are displeased that the Hostess company is no longer making payments into the union's pension plan.

Despite the cold weather those belonging to the Bakers and Confectioners Union have been rotating four hour shifts around the clock since saturday.

Some workers were just months away from retirement, but because of Hostess's Chapter 11 Bankruptcy in January and changes to their pension plans, they say they are forced to work much longer.

Hostess Brands announced today it will permanently close three bakeries as a result of the nationwide strike.

CEO Gregory Rayburn said in a statement that the widespread strikes are crippling business and forcing the company to close plants in St. Louis, Cincinatti and Seattle, affecting 627 jobs.
