More Conceal And Carry Permits In January Mean More Handgun Sales

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- A record number of people are applying to carry concealed handguns.

The Attorney General's office released the figures on Friday.

In January alone, more than 3,000 Kansans applied for a concealed carry handgun permit..

The Kaw Valley Gun Club staff is hearing a lot more gun shots these days, and their concealed carry classes are always full.

Kevin Ketter owns the establishment and said people need someone to teach them how to use a gun. "These people are scared right now. All the home invasions, robberies. People are scared and they want to protect themselves."

He said people are shooting handguns for the protection and the sport.

Experts say the most important part of the concealed carry permit is actually knowing how to shoot the gun.

"A lot of people come in and they don't know the first thing about them," Ketter said. "There's a couple different ways that you can bust your hand open if you don't know what you're doing."

Jennifer Haugh owns a business, Dead Eye Divas, and teaches classes geared specifically toward educating women about guns. She said more and more women are filling her classes.

"The biggest roadblock for them is just the fear of knowing how to handle a gun," she said. "And then there's also the intimidation, you know, going in looking like you don't know what you're doing. It's good for other women to show each other that there's nothing to fear."

Brian Box is seeing the gender gap shrinking at his small store, Second Amendment Sales.

"The amount of women who come in even without their husbands is definitely on the rise," he said, "definitely a change in the way the market used to be."

Box said the rise in permits seems to be feuling a rise in sales. He has no guns in his store, and doesn't know when he'll get another shipment. This could leave some customers waiting for the state to catch up with processing applications, disappointed.

"Everything's been bought up and supply can't keep up with demand," Box said.
