TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Budding scientists took over Forbes Field Tuesday with some inspiration from a beauty queen in combat boots.

Miss Kansas - and Kansas National Guard sergeant - Theresa Vail visited the Kansas STARBASE at the 190th Air Refueling Wing.

STARBASE is a Department of Defense program aimed at encouraging interest in science, technology, math and engineering among elementary school students.

Miss Kansas helped fifth graders with science experiments. She also shared her background and her goal to pursue a career in dentistry.

Vail believes the sciences are important because they are the future of the uUnited States.

"Back when I was a kid, back, when our parents were children, (science) was so boring because they didn't make it interesting to children," Vail said. "Here, they're making it relevant. They're making it interesting and fun so kids want to learn it."

Kansas STARBASE has programs in Manhattan, Salina, Kansas City and Wichita in addition to Topeka's program.
