TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- A military widow who brought a veteran's day parade back to the Capital City was honored Wedneday.

Melissa Jarboe, founder of the Jamie Jarboe Foundation and Military Veterans Project, was recognized as this month's Champion of Character. The Safe Streets Coalition and Topeka City of Character program recognized Melissa for the compassion, generosity and honor she demonstrated while organizing the November 11 parade in Topeka and a week of activities leading up to it.

Melissa says being by her husband's side after he was wounded by a sniper's bullet in Afghanistan through his death just over a year later changed her life and her perspective.

"I was a very selfish and greedy American," she said. "I never really gave back to my community. I just focused on my corporate position and I never gave back to the men and women that selflessly serve our country. So I give thanks and honor to my husband each day, and I hope each day I can live up to his expectations and make a difference in the community just like he did."
