(WIBW) - House Majority Leader Ray Merrick is moving to the Kansas Senate.

Johnson County Republicans selected him at a meeting Monday night to replace Sen. Jeff Colyer, effective Jan. 10. Colyer resigned his seat following his election as Lt. Governor.

Merrick spent the past decade representing House District 27 and currently served as leader of the chamber's Republican majority.

With his selection, the precinct committee members in Johnson County now must elect a replacement for Merrick's House seat. They'll meet Tuesday, Nov. 30 at Grace Church in Overland Park to make their choice.
