Memorial Day Events Around The Capital City

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- If you are lucky enough to have the day off Monday, there are plenty of events going on in the Capitol City for Memorial Day.

Here's a list of a few things you can do to honor veterans.

- The Vietnam Veterans will be at the Bell Tower in the south end of Topeka Cemetery. Mini tours of the historic cemetery will be conducted every half hour starting at 10 a.m.

- Senior Master Seargeant Doug Zerger will speak at Mount Hope Cemetery Chapel at 11 a.m.

- Penwell Gabel Cemetery will feature a wreath laying and remarks from Senator Pat Roberts and Topeka Police Chief Ron Miller. The festivities start at 11 a.m.

- Hungry veterans and their families will be able to participate in a BBQ luncheon at the Great Overland Station. Major General Lee Tafanelli will be providing opening comments. Lunch starts at 12:30 p.m.

- Foster Cemetery will hold a Memorial Day Dedication at 2 p.m. and families and friends are encouraged to come. The cemetery is located at 3949 SW Burlingame.

- At 3 p.m. a national moment of silence will observed at the Topeka Cemetery. Or take a moment of silence to remember fallen veterans at 3 p.m. wherever you are.
