Manspeaker Opts Against Mayor's Race

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - With one Topeka City Council member jumping into the mayor's race, another says he's ruled it out.

District 6 representative Chad Manspeaker said Wednesday he decided against seeking the Mayor's office. Manspeaker said he considered the option, but concluded his work representing his district "has only just begun."

"I think we have to do everything we can to improve our city’s central core, and I can do that from my current position," Manspeaker wrote in a statement. "Crime, infrastructure and a struggling local economy are the major problems we are facing. Our city has the tools to be successful. They just have to be used correctly and with a keen focus on the future."

Fellow Council member Larry Wolgast announced last week that we would run for the Mayor's office. In his statement, Manspeaker said he met with Wolgast and will support Wolgast's candidacy.

"Mr. Wolgast is a consensus builder who has contributed ideas and values that reflect a successful city," Manspeaker said. "(I)n my opinion, his priorities are the right priorities at this time for our community. "

Mayor Bill Bunten previously announced he would not seek re-election.

Complete statement from Chad Manspeaker:
After much consideration, I have decided not to run for Mayor of the City of Topeka. I feel my work as City Councilman for Topeka’s 6th District has only just begun. I think we have to do everything we can to improve our city’s central core, and I can do that from my current position. Crime, infrastructure and a struggling local economy are the major problems we are facing. Our city has the tools to be successful. They just have to be used correctly and with a keen focus on the future.

Late last week, Deputy Mayor Larry Wolgast announced his intention to be Topeka’s next Mayor. Mr. Wolgast has a long, successful history in public service, serving both our state and our city. Mr. Wolgast is a consensus builder who has contributed ideas and values that reflect a successful city. I have taken the opportunity to speak in depth with Mr. Wolgast and, in my opinion, his priorities are the right priorities at this time for our community.

I would like to thank the hundreds of people who in the last month have given me encouragement to run for Topeka’s Mayor. My family and I have been floored by the positive comments we have heard. I value the support that I have in our community and in our state. I love Topeka and there would be no higher honor than serving as Mayor, but the right decision for Topeka at this time is Deputy Mayor Larry Wolgast.
