Manhattan Residents Warned About Counterfeit Bills

MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) - A recent discovery of counterfeit money in Manhattan has drawn the attention of local law enforcement.

Over the past month the Riley County Police Department has been made aware multiple fake 20 dollar bills that have been passed off as legitimate.

This week officials are taking time to inform the public on how to identify counterfeit currency.

"All US paper currency has a security thread, a watermark," said Public Information Officer Matthew Droge. "There’s lots of other things that could be red flags. Smudged ink; the serial number ink should be the same ink as the seal. There’s a lot of security measures."

Police encourage anyone who comes across suspicious currency to consult with a bank or area law enforcement.
