Manhattan Rape Suspect Found Dead

RILEY COUNTY, Kan. (WIBW) -- Riley County police have identified the suspect in a recent sexual assault in Manhattan but he will not be charged with the crime. Vague details put out by police revealed that the man at the center of the investigation was found dead.

Alexander Shelton, 26, of Northeast Kansas, was wanted for a rape that was reported last week in Manhattan. According to a spokesman for the Riley County Police Department, Shelton was located in a jurisdiction "outside of Riley County over the weekend but was unable to be arrested for these crimes as he was found to be deceased prior to police arrival."

RCPD declined to release any other information about Shelton's death and did not specify which rape case they had connected him to.

On Sunday, August 11, 2013 around 4 AM, a 23-year-old woman was sexually assaulted by a stranger. An exact location of the offense has not been released but it occurred near Kansas State University's campus.

No other details have been released on the rape case. The RCPD, along with the Kansas State University Police Department, issued a warning last week, encouraging those walking at night to walk in pairs or small groups.

Shelton is not believed to be responsible for other crimes reported in the area, police said. RCPD officials say the investigation is ongoing but the department does not anticipate the release of any further information.
