Aggieville Beating Victim In Critical Condition

MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) -- A Manhattan man is in critical condition after Riley County Police say he was brutally beaten in Aggieville.

Around 2 a.m. Thursday, officers got a call about a person on the ground in an alley between Bluemont Avenue and Moro Street. That's about a block away from the main strip of bars and shops in Aggieville- an area surrounded by apartment complexes that house Kansas State University students.

Police found the victim, Kevin Cockrum, 31, unconscious. Cockrum was transported to Mercy Health Center with life-threatening head injuries. Cockrum was then airlifted to Via Christi Hospital in Wichita where he remained in critical condition late Thursday.

Officials believe he was beaten by several people but do not know the circumstances surrounding the violent attack or a motive.

Neighbors spotted detectives looking in dumpsters for evidence and say officers were going door to door asking if anyone had seen or heard anything in the alley. Nearby businesses were asked if they had surveillance cameras out back in the rear of their stores that might have captured the area of the attack. The businesses tell 13 News there are no securitry cameras pointed in that direction.

Patrol officers were asked to be on the lookout for a white Lexus with gold trim Thursday.

"Some witnesses provided information that this vehicle, occupied by three black males, was in the area in the same time frame that this occurred so at this time, they're just people that we need to speak to," said Lieutenant Richard Fink, spokesman for the RIley County Police Department.

The Riley County Police Department is investigating the attack as an attempted homicide. They're asking for help from anyone who has information about the car or the victim to call (785) 537-2112 ext 3100.
