TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A thief who has been scamming businesses across Kansas has made his way to Colorado.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says it received information that 45-year-old Robert Helms targeted a grocery store in Walsh, Colorado. Before this, they have said Helms impersonated a cop in order to use faulty checks to buy thousands of dollars worth of items from stores in 23 Kansas towns, including Holton and Sabetha.
The KBI says, in the past, Helms has shown store workers a badge identifying himself as a deputy with the Adams County, Kansas Sheriff's Office. However, there is no Adams County in Kansas. Authorities say Helms is now using the name Steve Bundy, who is the KBI agent leading the search for Helms.
The KBI says that, if Helms sticks to his past pattern, he may try to pass more bad checks in southwest Kansas or southeast Colorado in the coming days.
Anyone with information on Helms should call 1-800-KS-CRIME (1-800-572-7463).
