Man Captured After Escaping From Pottawatomie Jail

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY, Kan., (WIBW) --A man who escaped from the Pottawatomie County Jail was captured early Saturday morning.

Pottawatomie County Dispatch told 13 news that Jon Adrian Getzlaf was captured around 12:40 a.m. Saturday in Pottawatomie County. They did not release any other details on his capture.

Getzlaf escaped under a fence when he was outside in the recreation yard of the jail around 9 a.m. Friday. Dispatch said he was last seen heading south and that he was not believed to be dangerous.

As of Friday afternoon, police believed Getzlaf was still in the area. They locked down Westmoreland Elementary School as a precaution.

13 News' Sarah Plake talked with Investigator Gerald Schmidt Friday. He said inmates told authorities that Getzlaf did not want to "do his time."

Exercise times are not scheduled at the jail. Authorities believe it was a last minute decision on Getzlaf's part.

The city was sealed off but was that was lifted around 2 p.m. Authorities went through all the houses in the area but nothing was found.

A K-9 was brought in but was not able to track anything due to heavy traffic because of construction, according to authorities.

Getzlaf was arrested on March 30th in St. George, Kansas for unlawful possession of controlled substance.

The Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office was working with the Kansas Highway Patrol and Wamego Police Dept. on the case Friday.
