K-9 Unit Tracks Topeka Chase Suspect

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- A 21-year-old Colorado man was booked into the Shawnee County Jail Thursday morning on several charges after police say he led them on a chase in central Topeka.

According to the Topeka Police Department, an officer attempted to stop a vehicle with a 60 day tag at SW 16th Street and S Kansas Avenue at about 1:14 a.m. When the driver didn't pull over, police chased him a little more than half a mile to 16th and Central Park Avenue.

Police say the driver got out of the car and ran. A police K-9 unit responded and tracked the suspect to 914 SW 17th, where officials say he was hiding.

Chaz Contreras, of Fort Morgan, CO, was arrested and booked on attempting to elude, no driver's license, reckless driving, duty of driver to report an accident, and no proof of insurance.

A TPD spokesperson didn't immediately know which accident the "duty of driver to report an accident" refers to, but LT Scott Gilchrist initially said there were no injuries involved.
