TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - With dome and roof replacement in full swing at the Kansas Statehouse, a lofty lavatory is turning heads.

A brightly-colored portable toilet stands out among the web of scaffolding that surrounds the dome. It was first hoisted to its precarious perch over the summer, but, recently, has generated a renewed round of attention.

Statehouse architect Barry Greis says, even though the porta potty looks unusual, it's very practical to have it 250 feet off the ground.

"The time it would take to climb down 100 or 200 feet to use the restroom versus flying one up there was very practical use," Greis said. "I've only heard one comment and they wondered if someone was in it while it was being transported and the answer is 'no'."

Crews are currently working to replace the copper on the Capitol building's dome. It's part of a $332 million Statehouse renovation project.

Outdoor work will continue through fall of next year, with the entire Statehouse project completed by December 2013.
