Local Students Celebrate Valentine's Day

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-'Tis the season of love. It's Valentine's day; a time for , serenading, giving roses, teddy bears, candy grams and eating lots of chocolate.

However, students at St. Matthew's Catholic School won't be stuffing their face with heart- shaped chocolate this valentines day, they're taking a new approach.

"We are having a health and wellness fair on Valentine's Day and its called "Take it to Heart" and were focusing on healthy snacking and gardening, and also physical fitness," said Mary Alice Sheer, Wellness Committee Chair.

This is the first "Take it to Heart" event and K-8 students are eager to participate and learn.

"My favorite part of Valentine's Day is giving things and making people feel better," said Ariel Dean.

"It's fun because we can all hang out with our friends and do fun things to keep our bodies safe in a fun and healthy way," said 6th grader, Tay Davis.

Washburn Rural High School students from "This Generation" choir are surprising special someone's with a Valentine melody.

"Just spreading the love I guess, you know, it's really fun to see people's reactions when we sing for them and everyone's loved it so far," said Chris Janes.

All proceeds from the singing valentines went towards the Washburn Rural High School chorus fund.
