Local Organizations Honored For Their Pledge To Keep America Clean

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- A local organization tasked with cleaning up the country, honored its partners who are keeping that pledge alive.

Keep America Beautiful--Topeka--Shawnee County honored twelve local organizations with ten national awards honoring their commitment to litter prevention and waste reduction.

The local Keep America Beautiful affiliate received a second place national award for its community improvement efforts and its work with Lowes in disaster restoration following a tornado in Harveyville.

"We were so blessed and so privileged to receive that many national awards. I think maybe five was the most we ever gotten. And then also our local affiliate received three awards and we placed second in the nation for our affiliate, which is a total reflection of what the volunteers are doing," Philicia McKee, Keep America Beautiful.

The following groups were honored with national honors:

Shawnee County Parks and Recreation
Shawnee County Master Gardeners
Lowe's Home Improvement
Waste Management of Kansas
Payless Shoesource
TARC
Friends of Dornwood
Eisenhower Middle School
Highland Park High School
