TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Living the Dream Inc, the organization dedicated to preserving the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, kicked off its week-long celebration of the civil rights leader Sunday with "Unity in the Community" Day.

The musical festival featured gospel bands and soloists from various churches.

13 News anchor Ralph Hipp had the honor of serving as the event's master of ceremony.

Living the Dream, Inc. organizers say the Dr. King's dream is as relevant today as during his lifetime.

"Today it means that we continue to look at the struggles that we as all Americans have. But not only that, bringing people together and living the legacy and philosophy of Dr. King," John Nave, a committee member of Living the Dream, Inc., said.

Events throughout this week leading up to the Martin Luther King holiday include Respect Your Elders Day on Wednesday and the scholarship and awards banquet on Saturday.
