TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)__With warm days and cooler nights snakes could be out and about, but don't worry about sharing the space.
Snakes are everywhere. These slithery, scaly reptiles may frequent your yard but should you really be afraid?
"Absolutely not." Shared George Stevenson. "Snakes aren't going to chase you. They aren't going to attack you. When people get bitten by snakes they often say the snake attacked me, well it was just defending itself."
To a little 3 foot snake, a 6 foot tall human is a big threat. The term don't tread on me is taken literally in this case.
"Well most people are bitten by either stepping on the snake or trying to kill it." Added Stevenson.
Now if you are out in the wilderness and find yourself face to face with a snake, there are some things you need to know to keep yourself safe.
"They need to be aware of what species of snakes are out there. You need to wear hiking boots if you are going to be traveling through rugged terrain. Stay out of its range and move away from it. Be on your way and it will be on its way." Stevenson tells us.
Still afraid of snakes? Just wish they would disappear? Consider what would happen if they didn't exist!
"Everything has a purpose. What i always tell people is think about one snake that that eats almost exclusively rodents. If you eliminated all snakes right now, fairly soon we would be overrun with rodents." Shared Stevenson.
George also tells us there is nothing to fear and it all boils down to education. "Do a little bit of research, don't panic, find out the facts and everybody can calm down and go about their business. You don't have to be afraid to go outside."
If you do receive a snake bite from a venomous species, go to the closest hospital for treatment.
