TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - City officials reported positive news Friday about the Topeka Zoo's 30-year-old orangutan, Lena.

Zoo officials say they've allowed Lena back in her indoor exhibit.

Doctors performed a hysterectomy three weeks ago when they found the fetus she was carrying didn't have a heartbeat. An examination revealed she had a significant rupture to her uterus and the baby was outside it. A team worked five-and-a-half hours to repair the damage.

Zoo officials say a sonogram performed last week did not show any signs of internal infection.

Lena is back on exhibit and interacting with the zoo's two other female orangutans, Rudy and Rayma. Rudy also is pregnant and is expected to deliver in the next few weeks. Zoo officials say regular ultrasounds show her pregnancy continues to proceed normally.
