LAWRENCE, Kan. (WIBW)-- Officers from the Lawrence Police Department responded to the report of a robbery Saturday at Truity Credit Union, 3400 West 6th Street. The suspect, who took a taxi to the bank, robbed a teller and left the area in the taxi which was waiting outside. Officers were able to identify the taxi company and driver a short time later.

Investigators learned the suspect paid the taxi driver a significant amount of money to drive to Omaha, Nebraska where the suspect was dropped off at a bus station. Lawrence Police Detectives coordinated with members of the Omaha Police Department, who were able to locate the suspect at the bus station Saturday evening. The suspect made an attempt to flee, however Omaha Police Officers were able to take him into custody.

The suspect has been identified as Antonio P. Gaitan, 35 years of age, from Kansas City, Kansas. At the time of his arrest, Gaitan had an outstanding warrant through the United States Marshals Service for a parole violation, stemming from a previous conviction for bank robbery. Lawrence Police Detectives interviewed Gaitan in Omaha and linked him to the credit union robbery in Lawrence, as well as a bank robbery days earlier in the Kansas City area. Gaitan is currently being held without bond on the federal warrant as detectives prepare affidavits on the local robbery charge.

The Lawrence Police Department appreciates the assistance of the Omaha Police Department, the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Kansas Turnpike Authority, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and members of the Lawrence community.
