TOPEKA – Kansas Governor Sam Brownback announced today the nomination of Lana Gordon as Secretary of the Kansas Department of Labor.

“Lana has done a great job stepping in as interim Labor Secretary,” Governor Brownback said. “She has focused on finding fraud and abuse within the unemployment system and is focusing on improving the unemployment claimant process.”

Lana has been serving as interim Secretary since September 21, 2012. Previously, Gordon represented the 52nd House District for 12 years. In the Kansas House, she chaired the House Economic Development and Tourism Committee and House Education Budget Committee. She also is a former small business owner and educator.

“I’m honored to be nominated by the Governor. We have made significant changes in the last few months that improved efficiencies throughout the department,” Secretary Gordon said. “My goals for 2013 include changes in the claimant process and addressing fraud. We have just initiated a new program to collect delinquent debts owed to the agency by unemployment insurance fraud through the Treasury Offset Program (TOP). This program will benefit both employers and employees in Kansas. I look forward to improving our service to Kansans as Secretary.”

The mission of the Kansas Department of Labor is to advance the economic well-being of all Kansans through responsive workforce services.

The appointment will require confirmation by the Kansas Senate.
