TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Just over two-thirds of Kansas voters are expected to hit the polls for next Tuesday's general election.
Secretary of State Kris Kobach made his official prediction Thursday, saying he believes 1.2 million Kansas voters - or 68 percent - will vote Nov. 6.
The number is down from a 72-percent turnout in the last two presidential elections in Kansas. However, it would be on par with the 2000 presidential election. Kobach says that year would be most comparable, since it was the last presidential election in which Kansas did not have a U.S. Senate race on the ballot.
Kobach says the lack of a Senate race is one factor weighing into his prediction. He says it's also based in large part on how advance voting numbers are lagging far behind 2008.
Other factors playing into turnout, Kobach says, are the lack of statewide races to drive voters to the polls and the fact that only two of the four congressional races have major-party challengers.
Kobach says he hopes voters prove him wrong and go to the polls in record numbers.
