TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - 30 lucky kids are spending the night under the stars to kick off Great Outdoors Month.

8 to 12-year-olds from urban neighborhoods are camping out at MacLennan Park on the Cedar Crest campus.

The Topeka Capital Camp-Out is a nationwide effort led by the Coleman Company to teach urban and minority kids about outdoor fun.

Kids and their parents get to fish, hike, practice their archery and even make s'mores during the event.

Governor Brownback started it all by signing a proclamation recognizing June as Great Outdoors Month.

The camp-out runs through 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
