Keep America Beautiful Honors Topeka Area Volunteers

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Keep America Beautiful Topeka-Shawnee County honored its top volunteers Tuesday.

Groups and individuals were thanked for their efforts with a luncheon at Gage Park.

The day's top honor went to husband and wife team Paula Hladky and Willard Epling. They were presented the 2013 Eldon and Maggie Pinick Award.

KAB also recognized businesses, government entities, civic/community groups and youth/school groups for sharing time and resources in three categories.

Earning honors for waste reduction were Payless ShoeSource, Shawnee Co. Solid Waste, TARC and Seaman High School.

Award winners for beautification projects were Lowe's Home Improvement, Shawnee Co. Parks and Rec, Shawnee Co. Master Gardeners and Eisenhower Middle School.

Recognized for litter prevention efforts were Waste Management of KS, Highway Action Team/Neighborhood Action Team, Friends of Dornwood and Highland Park High School.

Tuesday's winners are now nominated for national honors. Last year, one local group took a first place at the national level wile three others claimed second place awards.
