(WIBW)-- U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom for the District of Kansas announced that Kansas ranked third in the nation for fiscal year 2013 for the number of firearms cases prosecuted.

A study from the US Justice Department show that among the 94 national judicial districts only the District of Puerto Rico and the Western District of Missouri filed more fire arms cases last year.

Grissom's office filed 298 firearms cases up from 291 during 202 and 279 during 2011.

The total includes charges under federal statutes that prohibit convicted felons from possessing firearms or making possession of firearms "in furtherance of drug trafficking" or crimes of violence.
