TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Forbes Field transformed into a disaster area Tuesday, but it wasn't as bad as it looked. The scene outside the 190th Air Refueling Wing was filled with car wrecks and bloody injuries, but they were all just props for an emergency response training exercise.

Despite the blaring tornado sirens, it was nothing more than a drill, but members of the Kansas Air National Guard responded all the same. Airmen worked alongside Shawnee County Emergency Management to act out a response to the pseudo-storm’s aftermath.

As crews searched the area outside the base for simulated injuries and casualties, officials gathered practiced their media skills inside with a mock news conference.

Drills like the one today happen annually at the 190th to ensure personnel are ready should disaster actually strike.

“There's always some things you see and you tweak when you get back with the results,” said Capt. Joe Blubaugh, the 190th’s executive director. “And I'm sure we'll find some areas where we can do better.”
