TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Advocates for the more than 5,600 Kansas children in the state's foster care system have scheduled an event to highlight the needs of foster children.

Gov. Sam Brownback was scheduled to open Monday's event at the Statehouse by signing a proclamation declaring May as Foster Care Month.

The signing was to be followed by a gathering on the south steps coordinated by the Kansas Department for Children and Family Services. Blue wristbands will be worn to show support for foster children and efforts to find them homes.

The agenda also included remarks by Kansas lawmakers and members of groups that help children and families with foster care and adoption services.
