TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- January 29, 2013 is Kansas' 152nd anniversary of statehood. Students all across the state are joining in the celebration, including more than 2,000 at the Kansas Historical Society, 6425 SW 6th Ave., Topeka.
They heard from Governor Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) and from President and Kansas-native Dwight D. Eisenhower, as portrayed by Bill Nicks.
Guests also celebrated Kansas history with crafts: weaving on a loom, making rope, spinning yarn, knitting, and basket weaving.
At 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 12 p.m. and 1 p.m., The Garden Kids, a living history group of grade and middle school students from the Abilene area, performed the skit A Day in the Life of Dwight Eisenhower- 1900, highlighting Ike's childhood in Abilene.
American Indian music and dance were also part of Tuesday's celebration at the Historical Society, which lasted from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. It coincided with the special exhibit Hail to the Chief. The theme for Kansas Day is presidents. Activities included searching the museum galleries for presidential artifacts and learning about the presidents featured on U.S. currency.
