TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) The Kansas Department of Transporation said late Thursday it is considering North Topeka detour changes in the wake of a second tractor trailer mishap in less than a week.
Around noon Thursday, a big rig got stuck trying to make the turn from North Kansas Avenue to Menninger Road. It is the marked detour for the Highway 24 / North Topeka Boulevard project.
The trailer's back wheels dipped off the side of the road. The trailer did not tip on its side, but a tire was damaged. The truck's driver, Eric Henderson, who told 13 News he is not from the area, said the narrow roads make it tricky to navigate.
"Unfortunately, you've got ditches here, you've got trees, gas lines, stop signs, so pretty much everything going against you is right here," he said.
Thursday's incident was at least the fifth like it since the detour began in early June.
KDOT says its exploring a separate detour for trucks or making improvements to the intersection. They say any changes would be in place by late next week.
The entire project to replace the Hwy. 24 bridge over N. Topeka Blvd. and rebuild the cloverleaf interchange is expected to last through November.

PROJECT UPDATE! Due to several traffic incidents that have occurred recently with semi truck traffic “falling off” the pavement on the marked detour route at the NW Menninger Road and N Kansas Avenue intersection, the Kansas Department of Transportation is looking at a couple of options to address this traffic incident issue.
1) KDOT is considering a marked detour route for semi truck traffic that would utilize a different route than the currently marked NW Menninger Road, North Kansas Avenue and Lyman Road. This detour route would be in place for semi truck traffic only. If the marked truck detour route is approved, KDOT would have this route implemented by late next week.
2) KDOT will also look at the NW Menninger Road and N Kansas Avenue intersection to see if there is any work that can be done to improve the radii distance for the eastbound NW Menninger Road to southbound N Kansas Avenue turning movement.
We will provide a project update once we know what improvements may be implemented to address this specific traffic related issue
