MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) -- A Kansas State University student is recovering from a gunshot wound after police say he accidentally shot himself while trying to clear his gun.

At 9:15 AM on Monday, November 26, 2012, the Riley County Police Department received a report of an injured person on Kimball Avenue near the Bill Snyder Family Football Stadium.

Jake Huber, 23, who sources say is a veteran, tells authorities that he was driving in the 2400 block of Kimball Avenue and went to clear his semi automatic handgun when the weapon discharged, striking him in the left leg and leaving him with serious injuries.

Huber managed to drive himself to the Manhattan Surgical Center nearby where he was treated and then transferred to Mercy Regional Health Center for further medical care.

Police officials said there is “nothing suspicious” about the incident and that Huber’s “story holds.”
