IOLA, Kan. (AP) -- Residents and businesses in the southeast Kansas community of Iola will be sending children back to school in style.
The Iola Register reports the city will hold its inaugural Back To School Block Party the evening of Aug. 14 in the courthouse square.
Pam Tressler and fellow members of the civic group PowerUp Iola came up with the idea. They approached hair stylists to offer children back-to-school haircuts for $10 during the celebration. The high school band will perform, church groups are preparing baskets for a drawing, and a local company is providing an outdoor movie screen for families to watch films.
The block party is also a fundraiser for two children with cancer, a teacher with cancer and another teacher who was recently hurt in a car accident.
