Insurance Agent Sentenced For Stealing Customers' Premiums

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A former Marshall County insurance agent will spend almost two years in federal prison for stealing customers' premiums.

49-year-old Monica Smart was sentenced Monday to 21 months.

She pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud, admitting that the crime happened while she worked for United Insurance in Marysville between January 2009 and August 2010.

Smart diverted customers' insurance premiums to her personal expenses and changed the premium payment schedules.

She was also ordered to pay $160,000 in restitution.
